Plot Summary
Based on true events, Evelyn tells the inspiring story of real-life hero Desmond Doyle and his young children, Evelyn, Maurice, and Dermot. Struggling to raise his kids alone in Ireland in 1953, Doyle is devastated when the power of the Church and the Irish courts take his children away and put them in orphanages. Vowing to reunite his family, he enlists the help of his friends and together they attempt to do what has never been done before - challenge a law before the Irish Supreme Court. Doyle's fight to keep his family intact becomes an uplifting testament to a father's love and the power of the human spirit.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn, and Alan Bates play Desmond's legal eagles, and when joined by Brosnan, the sight of this grandiloquent quartet lolling in pretty Irish settings is a pleasant enough thing, 'tis.
Fresh: A sprightly pace and a fatalistic sense of humor propel the proceedings over a generous amount of drinking jokes and other cliches of Irish life and culture.
Fresh: There's real inspiration to be found in this warmly told David and Goliath story, and 'tis a fine time to revel in that.
Rotten: It's Kramer vs. Kramer, without the Kramers, a 'true story' without much of the truth.

Well worth watching
Part of what makes this movie so good is that it is a true story. It can be viewed by the whole family without worry of prophanity, inappropriate sexuality, or disturbing violence. Finally a movie where God is honored, justice wins and you walk away feeling good about mankind once again. Highly recommend it!
what a beautiful story
I very much enjoyed this movie. A wonderful story of a fathers love for his children, how any parent should be... willing to do anything to have your children in your life and raise them in a loving environment. We get so used to seeing examples of mothers who go above and beond for their children, its great to see a true story of a man who does the same. The love for God in this movie is insprational. The Evelyn character is an adorable christian whose wisdom even shocks the adults. This movie is a good "family" movie to be watched by all. What a great well-known cast.
Worth a rent
Good story, with good character transformation, worth a rent. Some bad language and drinking, but other than that it's pretty clean.
