Plot Summary

Controversial and popular from the moment it opened, The Exorcist endures as a defining classic that influenced movies afterward and still shocks and haunts today. The frightening and realistic tale of an innocent girl inhabited by a terrifying entity, her mother's frantic resolve to save her and two priests - one doubt-ridden, the other a rock of faith - joined in battling ultimate evil always leaves viewers breathless. In the Extended Director's Cut, director William Friedkin and producer/screenwriter William Peter Blatty integrated over 10 minutes of footage deleted before the film's 1973 release. They include moments deepening the impact of a first-rate ensemble's remarkable performances and reinforcing the film's grip on its audience. A phenomenon of its time and for all time, The Exorcist astonishes and unsettles like no other movie.

The very best horror film got scarier

The movie that scared the heck out of me 20 years ago just got even freakier. I've seen this movie so many times and it doesn't stop freaking me out. But now, the added staircase scene, ahhhhh no friggen way. If I saw that when I was younger I would have developed an acute sleeping disorder almost instantly. There has never been a horror movie that scares me like this film does. No one has ever been able to top this level of scarey. Films like Paranormal activity, which sucked by the way, ends up looking like your cousins boring vacation videos compared to this. My one and only critisism of this film came after reading the book. I so wish the movie had gone as in depth with Father Maron's character. The book put the character in a whole new light for me.
I hope someone, somewhere out there one day makes a film that horror fans like me can say "That rivals the exorcist!" As it is now, none have even come close.

It will haunt you to the very last minute !!!!

The Exorcist stands the test of time, after 37 years is still the grandmother of all horror flicks. A masterpiece in every sense of the word.

Not the true Masterpiece

It's amazing what an additional 15 minutes can do to a film. The original release was a taught, terrifying, wholly believable film that still manages to scare the living bejesus out of me. However the newly pronounced "Director's Cut" does not improve upon the original, rather it unravels it's impressive tightness and delivers a sub-par experience. Aside from a 2 minute scene with the two priests on the stairs, this new edit disappoints and should really not be confused with the REAL Masterpiece that was released over 30 years ago.

As far as I am aware, Friedken released his original film as he intended, so this is not a release that corrects some historical injustice. Rent or buy the original; skip this one.
