Plot Summary

An official selection of the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, FAIRHAVEN dissects the lives of four thirty-something's in the tradition of films like BEAUTIFUL GIRLS and GARDEN STATE. Ten years after abruptly leaving his hometown, wayward bad-boy Dave (Chris Messina of TV's THE MINDY PROJECT, VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA) returns for his estranged father's funeral and is reunited with his old friends Jon (writer/director Tom O'Brien), a former high school football star trying to figure out his next move, and Sam (Rich Sommer of TV's MAD MEN), a real estate agent carrying a torch for his ex-wife (Emmy®-Nominee Sarah Paulson of TV's GAME CHANGE). The three settle into familiar patterns, but their friendship falters when Dave reveals the secret reason he left town.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: [A] beautifully acted, directed and edited little slice of New England life ... – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jan 10, 2013

Fresh: Personal tenderness combines with a good sense of composition and a naturalistic storytelling style to give a small, familiar premise a nice lilt. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jan 16, 2013

Rotten: While there's something undeniably fascinating about the way "Fairhaven" repeatedly avoids predictable payoffs for portentous dramatic setups, narrative momentum is conspicuous by its absence. – Joe Leydon, Variety, Jan 10, 2013

Rotten: Indies don't come blander than writer/director Tom O'Brien's Fairhaven ... – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Jan 9, 2013

Stunning achievement

As a resident of the town this movie is named after I wasn't sure what to expect, other than recognizing the local scenery. What I got was a beautifully told tale of what it means to become a man in the Peter Pan world we live in. I could not take my eyes off the screen or the actors' amazingly understated performances. It is a quiet film, and if you don't watch carefully you may think nothing much is happening, but you are a man at that age when there is nothing left of childhood, and I mean nothing, but memories you will be quietly hit with every emotion imaginable watching these guys over the course of a couple of days.

If you have ever struggled with your dreams of youth, or what it means to be a father, or if you have ever hurt someone you loved, left and ran away because you knew they would be better off without you...I could go on and on.

I will just say that beyond the emotional capabilities of all the actors involved, if you love cinema you will love this film. It is honest and true and that is all you can ever hope for in any work of art. Maybe it was a right time, right place kind of thing, but this film stayed with me for a long time after watching it. Please buy or rent it. Support this type of work because I want to see more films like this. We deserve it.

Amazing!

I thought this movie was brilliant!

Highly recommend.

A beautiful meditation on life, friendship and the universality of the past! Amazing and honest performances, feels like you are watching a documentary. Cinematography was outstanding, I felt transported to a small town in New England. Highly recommend.
