fantastic movie.
What a shame that this movie has gotten so little attention outside of south Africa. It do believe that had it been set for general release in the US it would have been a suprising hit. It is a ground breaking movie as it is not the ususal western style interracial couple, but rather one of two totally different cultures in a land that claimed to separate the races so completly racially when the evidence of the "coloreds" betrayed that lie. It showed that these people from two very different worlds came together and stayed together for love. It showed a man whose mom would rather see him alone than with a well educated black woman and a father that didnt' care about race as much as he cared about the Lobola, which means dowry. It also examines how girls can be seen as stocks and bonds, if you will, for the enrichment of their families in African society.
