Plot Summary
Through the eyes of ten-year-old Alexander, we witness the delights and conflicts of the Ekdahl family, a sprawling bourgeois clan in turn-of-the-twentieth-century Sweden. Ingmar Bergman intended Fanny and Alexander as his swan song, and it is the legendary director’s warmest and most autobiographical film, a four-time Academy Award–winning triumph that combines his trademark melancholy and emotional intensity with immense joy and sensuality.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A big, dark, beautiful, generous family chronicle, which touches on many of the themes from earlier films while introducing something that, in Bergman, might pass for serenity.
Fresh: A sumptuously produced period piece that is also a rich tapestry of childhood memoirs and moods, fear and fancy, employing all the manners and means of the best of cinematic theatrical from high and low comedy to darkest tragedy.
Fresh: Utterly enthralling.
Fresh: A sprawling, ornately constructed entertainment.

One of my very favorite movies...
… and I would argue that it’s one of the best!
This looks like the theatrical release version of Fanny & Alexander- there is a much longer version (available through Criterion) that was released on TV in Sweden… amazing!!!
Highly recommended!!!!!
One of my favorite
Combination of Swedish spirit, proper filming, multicultural, religious and human nature paradigms plus talent of great Bergman.
One of the greatest films of all time!!
I first saw the theatrical version of this movie on Hulu. It was lush, forboding, joyous, and painful at the same time. When I saw the Swedish TV version, I fell in love all over again. Bergman already had me with "Persona" and "Wild Strawberries". When I saw "Fanny and Alexander", he gained a fan for life.
