Plot Summary

Academy Award winner Julie Christie stars as a beautiful and fiercely independent Englishwoman of the 19th century in this lush and moving adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic romantic novel Far From The Madding Crowd. When proud, headstrong and unmarried Bathsheba Everdene (Christie) inherits a farm, she becomes a woman of independent means. Although three men court her, Bathsheba refuses to settle for less than a perfect suitor...which she will never find. But after she does agree to marry, Bathsheba realizes the mistakes she has made--and the damage her actions have caused.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Pictorially excessive but dramatically barren. – Bosley Crowther, New York Times, May 9, 2013

Fresh: [Schlesinger] displays the best sense of Victorian time and place since David Lean in Great Expectations. – TIME Magazine, May 9, 2013

Rotten: Christie has few real opportunities to branch out of her rather muted and pouty lead. – Variety Staff, Variety, May 9, 2013

Fresh: Alan Bates, in a change of pace, is the loyal shepherd. Terence Stamp is a suitably vile Sgt. Troy, and Peter Finch makes Boldwood strong and honorable in his love for Bathsheba. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, May 9, 2013
