Plot Summary
La Recoleta Cemetery is the oldest in Buenos Aires. In 1881 at the same time as the formation of the modern Argentine state, it was transformed into a necropolis: a symbolic city within a city, in which the mausoleum of the “founding fathers” map out an official history. However, this history can also be read from the point of view of the vanquished. As a poem-essay, Fatherland narrates the continual and repeated confrontation of two versions of history: from the winners and those defeated. And it does it in a location that is at the same time concrete and symbolic: in the cemetery where friends and foes rest side by side.
