Plot Summary
Virtually unseen since its theatrical premiere in 1953, Fear and Desire is the ambitious first feature film by legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. An existential war film often compared with the director's Paths of Glory (1957) and Full Metal Jacket (1987), Fear and Desire follows a squad of soldiers who have crash-landed behind enemy lines and must work their way downriver to rejoin their unit.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: If Fear and Desire is uneven and sometimes reveals an experimental rather than a polished exterior, its over-all effect is entirely worthy of the sincere effort put into it.
Fresh: Treat it like a wobbly, precocious demo from a 24-year-old with mighty aspirations, filled with hints of what he would become, and you'll be properly enthralled.
Fresh: For all its heavy-handed gloom and stylistic unevenness, Fear and Desire has a certain fierceness that's hard to shake.

Low Budget Kubrick Film
I wouldn’t recommend this film to anyone other than real film fans. It is interesting to see what Kubrick could do with little money and unknown actors. The camera angles, use of shadows and cuts are definitely intriguing, but the acting drags it down.
