Plot Summary
When a writing assignment lands journalist Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and sidekick Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) in Las Vegas, they decide to make it the ultimate business trip. But before long, business is forgotten and trip has become the key word. Fueled by a suitcase full of mind-bending pharmaceuticals, Duke and Gonzo set off on a fast and furious ride through nonstop neon, surreal surroundings and a crew of the craziest characters ever (including cameo appearances by Cameron Diaz, Christina Ricci, Gary Busey and many others). But no matter where misadventure leads them, Duke and Gonzo discover that sometimes going too far is the only way to go.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: (Gilliam's) vision is too reflexively comic to evoke the shadows of dread in Thompson's writing.
Rotten: Pic serves up a sensory overload without any compensatory reflection on the outlandish and irresponsible behavior on view.
Fresh: It's certainly distinctive, looking at times like Richard Lester put through a postmodernist blender.
Fresh: Bizarre, unpredictable yet strangely alluring.

Love it or Hate it
I understand where people are coming from when they say that this film is a waste of time, or it's just too weird. In personal opinion, I think it is simply fantastic and a perfect depiction of Hunter S. Thompson's graphic story. The two main characters: Depp and Del Toro, are depicting Hunt and his lawyer on a journey into "Bat Country" and a surreal whirl of the Las Vegas experience while baked out of their minds. Props to them both: Depp is always a thrilling actor and no exception to this film, but Del Toro is more fun to watch in this movie. He was incredible in his role as a psychotic lawyer looking for revenge, and he should have won an Oscar for his disturbingly good acting. If you hate it you loathe it, but if you love it you fear its powerful image and phenomenal acting.
Thanks Hunter
I was a little taken back by ITunes' summary of this title not mentioning the good Doctor's name. If it weren't for Hunter than this movie would never exist... so, before you go praising Colonel Depp (which by all means, praising him and Benicio in this movie is a must!) raise your glass of Wild Turkey to the weird and grab a .44 for this king-hell salute to the American Dream! We miss you Hunter!
