FEELIN IT

I didn't know what to expect but I loved this movie! Smart writing, elegant directing, terrific performances from a talented cast. I'm more of a big budget popcorn movie type than an indie person but I found this little film thoroughly entertaining.

The pursuit of happiness

I love psychosexualsocial films that explore the intersections of our various stage presences (to use the Goffman metaphor). Every time I try to dismiss fiction as irrelevant and superfluous, I run into a book or film that strikes at the human condition in such a way as to help illuminate some truth I had either never grasped or simply ignored. This is one of those films. It centers around an Asian massage parlor in New York City. Its true center, though, is the Goffmanesque intersections of the characters' different worlds, and the director successfully accomplishes this daring feat with only a small number of flaws melted into an exquisite canvas.

When the director/writer drift into sentimentality, the film lags a bit. And there is no doubt that his perspective of the world of massage parlors is excessively rosy. Those points aside, the film effectively tries to reach into the inner worlds of all of its primary characters, producing some fascinating portraits of the pursuit of happiness in a world filled with disappointment with a dash of hope mixed in.

Be warned, it is a sexually charged film, though artfully so and with very minimal nudity.

Felt facinated.

A little slow. A little predictable, with some twists. But, a train wreck that's hard to turn away from.
