Plot Summary

Malcolm Toohey (Joel Edgerton of Zero Dark Thirty) is a committed husband, father and a dedicated detective who’s not afraid to put his body on the line. After surviving a shot through his bullet proof vest during a major drug bust, his Drugs Squad rowdily celebrates their success and Malcolm’s courage at the local pub. Although Malcolm has been drinking, he gets in his car to drive home – and a tragic accident occurs. Shortly after, Jim Melic (Jai Courtney of Divergent) and his veteran partner Carl Summer (two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson) are assigned to the case. Jim narrows his focus onto Malcolm as Carl does everything he can to cover up the truth for a fellow cop, putting his own distinguished career on the line.As these three detectives become embroiled in a tense psychological struggle, every idea they’ve ever had about the meaning of justice, guilt, and innocence will be questioned. How far will each man go?

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Thanks to Saville's tightly controlled direction and a superlative cast, the mere exchange of glances builds as much suspense as the kinetic action sequence that opens the pic. – Ronnie Scheib, Variety, Mar 4, 2014

Fresh: This is a smart, sophisticated film, one without obvious heroes and villains, a fine addition to the honour roll of recent Australian crime dramas including Animal Kingdom, Snowtown, Last Ride and Mystery Road. – Stephen Romei, The Australian, Sep 3, 2014

Fresh: An outstanding, tautly directed, superbly acted film that again proves, as did Animal Kingdom, that Australian filmmakers have a distinctive knack for quality crime dramas that dig deeply into character and the morals that motivate their actions. – Jim Schembri, 3AW, Aug 29, 2014

Fresh: Edgerton and Saville have refused to short-change any of their characters, and their complexities ensure an ending that makes you think -- and go on thinking about one of the finest Australian films to come along this year. – Sandra Hall, Sydney Morning Herald, Aug 28, 2014

Exceptional Cop Film

No chases, one bullet fired, one essential bullet fired, gripping, touching, engrossing, outstanding performances. And one of the lead actors in the film wrote it.

Felony

A disturbing film in that it concerns a dedicated detective, husband, and father who makes wrong decisions that affect multiple lives. He makes the decision to drive after he has been drinking. As a result his driving is impaired and hits a child riding his bicycle delivering newspapers. He makes a false written statement and does not admit his guilt except to a fellow detective whose morals prove to be suspect. The fellow detective covers for him and instructs him not to tell the truth in order to survive. A third detective suspects that the detective is guilty and pursues it.
Joel Edgerton,Tom Wilkerson, and Jai Courtney are excellent as the three men involved in this moral dilemma
