Plot Summary
When Reshma (Degrassi's Melinda Shankar) and her mother (Ritu Singh Pande) migrate from Guyana to the US, the family is split apart when her father stays behind and her mother remarries an American businessman (Aidan Quinn). Reshma comes of age as a rebellious New York City teenager, and her tumultuous relationship with her family culminates when she receives shocking news about her father from Guyana, that sends her on an unforgettable journey back to her homeland. An immigrant story told with fresh perspective, Festival of Lights touches on the importance of family, the American dream, and the struggle to find one's identity in an increasingly complicated world.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: It ends up being largely just another story about a rebellious American teenager.
Rotten: Somewhere in her switch from documaking to fiction filmmaking, Shundell Prasad seems to have lost touch with clarity.
Rotten: The travel-heavy third act, which leapfrogs a host of key plot points, risibly defies logic and clarity as the film barrels toward its forced and sentimental conclusion.
Rotten: Universal themes aren't enough to buoy unimaginative drama.
