Plot Summary
Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka. Tevye the milkman, played by Israeli actor Topol, is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the romantic entanglements of his five daughters, and the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews. Tevye carries on lengthy conversations with God whenever the weight of the world becomes too much for him, he does not answer but he is at least more willing to listen than the milkman's remonstrative wife Golde. Tevye is forced to do some quick rearranging when his oldest daughter Tzeitel falls in love with poor tailor Motel Kamzoil after he has already arranged a marriage between her and wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf. Fancying himself more broad-minded than his gentile oppressors, Tevye cannot accept the notion that his other daughter Chava would want to marry Fyedka, a non-Jew. When Tevye and his neighbors are forced out of Anatevka by the Czar's minions he must find a way to change his tune and his entire life.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: They want to show us everything, to give us our money's worth. In so doing, they've not just opened up the play, they've let most of the life out of it.
Fresh: Sentimental in a theatrical way, romantic in the oldfashioned way, nostalgic of immigration days, affirmative of human decency, loyalty, bravery and folk humor.
Fresh: Would it be heresy on my part to suggest that Fiddler isn't much as a musical, and that director Norman Jewison has made as good a film as can be made from a story that is quite simply boring?
Fresh: Jewison's attention to detail is undeniable -- great care was taken to represent Jewish customs as accurately as possible.

Fiddler on the Roof.
One of the all time best movies ever conceived. The artistic arrangement of the drama so perfectly captures the essence of the culture and the events of the time. I have heard my parents often speak of those days, but I never really related to the stories until I watched this movie. And the music---it touches the very depths of the soul.
Quite the Classic
This movie/musical is quite the classic and worth your time for a viewing.
A wonderful movie!
I recently discovered Fiddler on the Roof and fell absolutely in love with it. The unique setting before the Russian revolution presented a whole new aspect of history to me. The songs are wonderful, classic and catchy, and the conflict feels real. This movie is well worth purchasing!
