Plot Summary

Ukrainian immigrant A.K. (Eugene Hutz) finances his dreams of "trans-continental superstardom" with his band, Gogol Bordello, by turning tricks as a role-playing cross dresser. As A.K. literally whips the privileged of London into shape, he secretly pines for the object of his affection, Holly (Holly Weston), an aspiring ballerina looking for her big break while moonlighting as a slippery stripper. Meanwhile, Juliette (Vicky Mclure) steals medicine from her pharmaceutical job in hopes of quenching her dreams of helping Africa's youth. A world premiere at Berlin, FILTH AND WISDOM is erotic and playful, poignant and touching, revealing the universal struggles we all face in our pursuits of happiness.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Madonna shoots it all like a home movie made by someone who has been on the other side of the camera so often, doing music videos, reality no longer feels remotely real. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Nothing in this cynical bit of claptrap feels remotely real. – Ruthe Stein, San Francisco Chronicle, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Madonna has made a career out of toying with image and ego, but this is a vanity project in the smallest sense possible. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Madonna fans will probably want to go anyway -- hey, I can't stop you -- but I can tell you that the movie delivers on neither of the promises of its title. – Neely Tucker, Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010
