Plot Summary
Independent African-American gay cinema is given a refreshing, realistic twist in this seductive drama. Faybien Allan is young and stylish, appearing with hip friends at NYC's trendiest spots. But beneath the sparkle of his nightlife and stunning good looks is a man buckling under his father's homophobia. Full of self-loathing and desperate for direction, he meanders through life until meeting Lonnie, a confident activist with a flirtatious smile. This movie has received a Velocity Award for the best film of 2009. I have seen it about 25 x's and every time have enjoyed it like it was my 1st. The story is about friendship, and finding ones self identity. It's a great story of ages thats good for all to see. I heard theres even a sequel to be released in 2010.
I would rather find out how to get my 2.99 back!
Before i start, i must say i am particularly sympathetic and biased towards films that are of the SGL community and even more so of the SGL community of color so i do commend Roger S. Omeus Jr in his endeavor into creating a film that attempts to bring a narrative within our community to light. However unfortunately, this is where my disappointment begins with this film. With most independent films there is a threshold of forgivable low production values because of the nature of low budgets and low resources however, when you are encountering moments where the dialogue is polluted entirely by ambient noise and simple setups are so saturated with sunlight where the characters are submerged to the point that they are beyond recognition and then the other extreme where you are adjusting your screen to find the characters, you are left trying to find out if we are just simply submitting films to our audiences for the sake of doing so and not trying to actually shoot air-able footage. the story line of finding me is paper thin and has left me trying to find where Omeus was going rather than the natural flow that is absent in this film. Raymartell Moore and Derrick L Briggs the two most prominent characters in the story line fail to deliver the necessary acting skills to bring their characters to life. however Moore's character does have moments of believable naivety and vulnerability that has you intermittently connecting with him which is one of the few success in the film. On the other hand, J'nara Corbin and Eugene Turner's characters outshine their lead counterparts and have you drawn into their vignettes however nonsequitor they maybe to the actual film. With a considerable and more than forgiving amount of tolerance this film can be watchable and when stripped of the obvious spectacle of it being a SGL film of color it leaves a lot to be desired. To my knowledge Finding me 2 is in production and might already be getting ready to be released. I hope and pray that The director, the cast, and the crew have all found themselves and the unforgivable errors and areas of lacking in this film. It does have immense potential and it would be ill of me not to say so but if your looking for a very amateur movie with a very thin plot to keep you slightly distracted for an hour and 54 minutes i suggest this film, anything more than this save your money.
Finding Me
Should be a must see for all young & not so young Black Gay/SGL Men. True to life and pointedly defines the struggles of our community, who we are, and the choices we make.
I wish this film was around when I was young!!!!
