Plot Summary

Celebrated sword-and-sorcery artist Frank Frazetta teams up with animation director Ralph Bakshi for this high-energy animated fantasy. It's a prehistoric battle of the elements as the dissolute ruler of the Ice World, Nekron (Sean Hannon), starts a war against the fire people using a massive, advancing glacier and armies of subhuman monsters as his weapons. When he arranges to have the fire king's shapely daughter, Teegra (Cynthia Lenke), kidnapped, the adventure begins as she escapes her captors and hooks up with Lorn (Randy Norton), lone survivor of an earlier skirmish. With the aid of a mysterious dark warrior (based on Frazetta's famous painting "The Death Dealer"), Lorn and Teegra fight the armies of Nekron as well as giant monsters, lesbian sorcerers, and other comic book delights. A thunderous classical score by William Kraft adds excitement to this violent, sexy, fast-moving film. It also benefits from unusual animation techniques that nicely complement the far-out imaginations of Frazetta, Bakshi, and screenwriters Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway.

One of Bakshi's Best!

While I do prefer seeing Ralph Bakshi's other animated films, this was a great picture. Good conquering evil; a typical sword and sorcery movie in the vein of Conan The Barbarian. Although the film is rated PG, I'd recommend that parents snoop through the movie first before allowing their kids to watch. There's a few bloody scenes here and there as well as some brief adult language.

Reminds me of when animation was awesome

This movie embodies the gritty, meandering style which makes Bakshi's work so enjoyable. It combines stunning rotoscopic animation with a cheesy high-fantasy epic feel. A surprising degree of nudity and mature thematic elements slant this film toward a more mature audience.

Stupid, yet enjoyable for the most part.

While not a big fan of Ralph Bakshi, I do appreciate his thoughts on animation being more adult, even if his attempts are uncomfortable to watch (Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic). However, I always had a soft spot for his fantasy works like Wizards and the first film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. They all had numerous flaws, but I enjoyed them and this one, Fire and Ice is no exception. The art direction is very good. The late artist, Frank Frezetta, had a big part in this film and he did a great job on the backgrounds and the film poster. The rotoscoping here may be the best I've seen in an animated film. It also features some creative looking creatures, although you don't see much of them. But, it does suffer from cliches like and uninteresting lead male character, an uninteresting villian, and a princess who is way too Disney-like. Despite this, I really enjoy the look of this film and that may be the best thing about it. I've heard the news about Robert Rodriguez doing a remake of this. It may be more serious and bloody then what we have for the moment. It may also make this version forggetable and while it kind of is, I don't want to see it go away. It has this cheesy charm that can't seem to be matched.
