Plot Summary
Talented young dancer Chip leaves behind his troubled family life in Kansas to join a small dance troupe in New York City, where he struggles with discipline, competition, self-doubt, and first love. He is quickly initiated into the rites of passage of a New York dancer’s life, where discipline and endless hard work, camaraderie and competitiveness, the fear of not being good enough, and the joy of getting it just right, inform every minute of every day. Featuring dancer Ryan Steele in his first film role, the dynamic “Five Dances” captures the exhilaration and emotional turmoil of a small dance company and the dancers who struggle to make it big.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: There's an interesting vibe there, but it's not enough to save what seems like a failed experiment.
Fresh: Rather than adapting the pieces to conform to his paper-thin narrative, Brown explores the tensions and contortions of dancers expressing fresh emotion through a pre-existing art form.
Fresh: Five Dances should well impress dance aficionados even if its skimpy narrative proves less than inspired.
Rotten: Unfortunately, schmaltzy music and drab melodrama drag down the otherwise graceful moves of Five Dances.
