Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The film's nervewracking quality is consistent with its content. Nicholson's performance is a remarkably varied and daring exploration of a complex character, equally convincing in its manic and sober aspects. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: It's a great work of the Discover America Seventies. – Nick Pinkerton, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The flaws of this acutely self-conscious 1970 road picture grow more obvious with every passing year, but so does its passion and eloquence. – Michael Sragow, New Yorker, Jul 18, 2014

Fresh: Nicholson makes it all go. He proves he is more than a "character actor" with many scenes, especially the confrontation with his father. – Gene Siskel, Chicago Tribune, Jan 18, 2013

I feel that this is the most under appreciated Nicholson film ever. I can really relate to this story. It's as if Jack can't help but weave in and out of that threshold of his mind. He's on the fringe of insanity, and self destruction (not to mention the destruction of others) and love and kindness. Just when he seems so close he ruins it for himself. A truly depressive soul. He can't take to mundane aspects of life. He has no idea how to be happy. It's one of the great films of its time!
