Plot Summary
Arlis Sweeney (Dennis Quaid) leads a life as simple and unchanging as his native West Texas plains. He stocks vending machines, moving from town to town and from one familiar lover to another. Kay Davies (Meg Ryan) also calls the road her home. Running from a broken marriage, she doesn't know where she's headed, but any place is better than where she's been. Fate brings them together and gives them a future, until a figure from the past–Arlis's father (James Caan) –awakens a memory as deep and dark as a grave: a family history written in cold blood. From the writer of The Fabulous Baker Boys and Wonder Boys, and co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow in her first major feature film role.

Flesh and Bone
This is a good, modern western- suspense flick. The filmmaker uses the sense of isolation given by the landscape beautifully, so that it quietly adds to the tension and mystery of the story as it builds. Has possibly one of the most eerily creepy opening scenes of any movie I've watched. I love Dennis Quaid, and he's Gary Cooper good here, and Meg Ryan is sweetly vulnerable as a distressed, intoxicated, cake -popping damsel he accidently rescues one night, or so it seems. James Caan gives an unforgettble performance as evil incsrnate, and to watch him is worth buying this movie for. As for Gwyneth Paltrow's steely debut, well, from the first second she is on screen you know she's going to be a star.
Haunting and unforgettable
I watched this film when it first came out as a teenager. The Greek tragedy element of the story resonated deeply with me then, even though I was not old enough to be able to empathize with irreparably damaged people. Now I’m nearly 40, and the film is still just as intellectually stimulating as well as profoundly true, emotionally. Meg Ryan may be the weakest acting link in this picture, but she gives one of the stronger performances of her career here.
You don’t have to be a fan of any of the actors or of westerns to be moved by the accessible drama that unfolds in Flesh and Bone. I have seen it a dozen or so times over 2 decades, and it still makes me cry every time.
