Plot Summary

Based on a novel by Elleston Trevor, director John Moore's The Flight of the Phoenix is a remake of a 1965 film of the same name starring film icon James Stewart. The story revolves around the plight of Captain Frank Towns (Dennis Quaid), a pilot whose C-119 cargo plane full of oil workers could not withstand the violent winds of a desert sandstorm. Stranded in the harsh terrain of Mongolia's Gobi Desert (a departure from the original, in which the plane crashed in the Sahara), Frank and his navigator face an equal challenge in maintaining order among the survivors. The group of oilmen had planned on an uneventful trip to shut off a group of rigs falling below their productivity expectations — not fending for their very lives. Before long, some men are revealed as cowards, while others exhibit a surprising show of strength, all the while hoping that the wreckage of the original plane can be salvaged before a Lord of the Flies situation occurs. Miranda Otto is featured in a supporting role, as well as Giovanni Ribisi and Tyrese Gibson.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: By film's end the adventure appears less a matter of base survival than a beach barbecue gone slightly sour. – Mark Holcomb, Village Voice, Dec 28, 2004

Rotten: The wonderful character actors in the original ... are succeeded by a fairly anonymous bunch. – Lou Lumenick, New York Post, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: This time out, there's not much out there to look at besides sand, and even it doesn't look real. – Geoff Pevere, Toronto Star, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Other than Dennis Quaid, none of these characters leaves so much as a footprint in the sand. We don't know them. We don't care about them. – Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper, Jun 24, 2010

THANK YOU!!!

As soon as this movie is available to buy, I will buy it!!! Not only is this an exciting story with an incredibly fun twist, it has amazing leadership parables, that most people may miss. The shift of authority between characters is so interesting as the plot unravels, and each character is able to contribute a skill or quakity aquired from their life before the climax, and ultimately each character plays a role in inspiring and leading the rest of the survivors in order to have a functional community and accomplish their common goals. HIGHLY recommended... others who have reviewed this film have submitted their honest opinions, but I encourage them to watch it again in this new light... I know I will. This film is a must have classic, and will be a trophy of my library!

Not a quality remake...

Please give us the original version. This is a cheap knock-off.

Get the original movie. This is a very poor remake.

Don't bother with this. Get the original movie starring Jimmy Stewart.
