Plot Summary
Honored with opening night of the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival and a hit at the New York, Toronto and AFI fests, THE FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON is simply one of the most acclaimed films of 2008. This French production by legendary Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao Hsien stars Juliette Binoche as divorced mom having issues with newly hired babysitter Song (Song Fang) and her 7 year old son Simon (Simon Iteanu). "A quiet, unassuming and flawless tribute to Paris, to the spirit of childhood and to the ability of art to compensate for some of the painful imperfections of life...a typically subtle and astute performance (by Binoche)." - Scott, NY Times "Juliette Binoche gives her best performance in years." - Anderson, Time Out NY
Customer Reviews
Brilliant!
Give this film a chance please...yes it's slow paced but this film is like a fine meal or a cup of coffee... It is best enjoyed when you're willing to slow down and savor it...
Mesmerizing
This film is simple, yet enchanting. To describe this movie as a "fine wine" is perfection. Those who saw this film is "boring" need to reflect a bit on their own lives. If they can't enjoy a film about "a day in the life", and prefer to watch some movies packed with killing and martial arts need to reevaluate the meaning of life. Watching someone's daily life is so beautiful to me, even with its ups and downs (as this movies shows). If you're like me, then this movie is for you.
Please rent some other movie
Nothing happens in this movie. Very, very boring. Does everything have to unfold in real time? It seems the director and cinematographer are in love with images of Paris -- OK, but why not include a story, too?
