Plot Summary

The incomparable Stephen Sondheim brought his sensational "Follies" to the stage in 1971 where it was hailed as "monumental theater" by The New York Times. Fourteen years later, the magic was recreated by an unparalleled gathering of stage and screen luminaries performing with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center for a wildly enthusiastic audience. This one-night-only performance became a legendary event in Broadway history--"Follies in Concert!" The evolution of this unique, historic event is exclusively captured in this film, from the first rehearsal--just four days before the show--to the last second butterflies just before the curtain rose. This is a rare treasure for all fans of musical theater. Includes the memorable songs "Losing My Mind" and "I'm Still Here" and an all-star cast!

More documentary than show

Viewers hoping for a true concert preseentation of a broadway show will likely be disappointed. The movie spends a considerable amount of time in the beginning interviewing the cast and filming rehersals. When it finally gets to showtime, the entire production is not shown, only key exerpts. Those not yet familiar with the show get little to no grounding in the plot and characters, just a succesion of (terrific) stars singing their songs.
Beyond this unfortunate format, the film quality is unexpecedly poor, with the grainy look of a pooly lit home movie shot on very old equipment. There are far too many long shots from the perspective of the upper balcony making it impossible to see the cast on stage. In spite of the early date of the production (1985), the technical ability to film a clear, high quality production did exist, as is evident in the production of Sunday in the Park with George, filmed the same year.
I'm glad I rented before I bought this video. While musically entertaining, it is not what I wanted as a concert presentation of a show.

Sondheim on ITUNES...... the world turns another screw

I was amazed and thrilled to find this great tribute to the Follies original soundtrack and live performances by still living singing legends in the wings of great broadway work. Having attended this one night only in 1985 I find it all over again in total recal of this great work.
