Informative, Entertaining, Inspiring, and Humorous
This movie is GREAT!!!! It covers many of the problems with food in America today, but does so in a way that tells you a story, rather than lecturing at you. I learned a lot, laughed a lot, and felt inspired after watching it.
Food Stamped follows a couple taking a close and personal look at what it's like to try to eat healthy on a food stamp budget. They take "the food stamp challenge" in order to do so, budgeting slightly over one dollar per meal. Their experiment helps make the political discussions around food into a personal journey that's both entertaining and enlightening. The film includes salient stats on the Farm Bill, the obesity epidemic, etc, but never wanders too far from the humanity of these issues.
The filmmakers acknowledge that their "food stamp challenge" is only a non-scientific experiment, but nonetheless the issues they encounter are very real. Furthermore, they interview Members of Congress, food bank workers, food stamp shoppers, farmers market patrons, and many others in an effort to understand the challenges of eating healthy on a food stamp budget.
A Falsehood meant to mislead!
I didnt like this movie. First, these people budget a dollar meal. That isnt true and not even close to what those who are on food stamps receive. Like all Hollywood movies, its meant to mislead those who are not informed. My best friend was on food stamps for a family of 5 (Three of them were 5 years and under.), while her husband was finishing his college education and again....when her husband lost his job. She will tell you that they ate like kings. She was given $900 a month the first time, and over a thousand dollars a month the second time. They ate name brand cereal, cookies, name brand treats, plenty of fruit and veggies, steak, peel and eat shrimp, pot roast, pork roast, pork chops and lots of other wonderful foods. I have a family of 4. We spend on avg $750 a month. Even less...when the kids were little. I have managed to feed my family just fine. However, we dont eat name brand cereal, nor do we get to eat fancy treats. Now that food costs have gone up, thanks to Obama....I still manage to feed my family healthy foods. I spend less than what those get on food stamps feeding the same amount of people. Another dear friend, is 70, her husband just left her. She gets nearly $200 a month. I get tired of this nonsense. They need to rethink this whole a dollar a day is all people get on foodstamps. Its not responsible reporting or movie making.
Loved it!
I thought this was informative and interesting. It wasn't nearly as preachy as I thought it might be and in the end it illustrated a great point about the future of our country and the priorities we SHOULD be taking to eat healthier, especially during economic hardships.
