Plot Summary
Based on the best-selling controversial novel by Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls graces the screen with legendary stars Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. The story follows expatriate American demolition expert Robert Jordan (Cooper) who aides anti-fascist freedom fighters of Spain. Assisting him is a band of warriors including the strong-willed Pilar (Katina Paxinou in an Oscar®-winning performance), the dangerously undependable Pablo (Akim Tamiroff) and the lovely, innocent Maria (Bergman). As danger mounts, Robert and Maria develop a closeness that blossoms into one of the screen's greatest love stories. Epic in scope yet intimate in feeling, For Whom the Bell Tolls remains a shining example of Hollywood moviemaking at its finest.

No Man Is An Island...
I am so glad to see this movie in the iTunes Store, and proud to have it in my library now. Courage and Sacrifice. Based on Ernest Hemingway's epic novel, this movie is a master study in character. Robert Jordan, American demolition expert, has joined the Spanish Republicans in their fight against the fascist forces of General Franco. He is assigned to blow up a bridge, and meets up with a rag-tag group of loyalist irregulars. With them is Maria, a young woman who has experienced the terror of their fascist opponents first hand. She and Jordan find romance against the backdrop of war. The Spanish Civil War is a sometimes forgotten chapter in the annals of 20th Century history, which is odd. Two of the finest writers and journalists--Orwell and Hemingway--chronicled the struggle in reporting and fiction. Many Americans saw the handwriting on the wall and joined the Republicans agianst Franco's fascists. They fought for what they believed. They are the forgotten heroes of conscience, fighting in what would be the prelude for a world at war. For Whom The Bell Tolls shows the honor of fighting for principles, and the less than noble acts done in the name of war. Gary Cooper is excellent as Robert Jordan, and there is no one who can light up a scene like Ingrid Bergman. Along with an excellent supporting cast, Cooper and Bergman deliver a story that is timely in its content. The directing is crisp and concise. Buy or rent it. You won't be disappointed.
