Plot Summary

Academy Award winner Melissa Leo delivers a breathtaking performance in this powerful character piece. Full of buried desire coupled with an inability to meaningfully connect, Francine staggers through sex, alcohol, religion and drugs without any lasting effect. The film offers no pat explanations as to how Francine came to be who she is or where she should go next. Instead it explores her character through Leo's incredible instinct, talent and presence which combine to deliver a memorable portrait of one woman's journey

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: With no back story, scant dialogue and few narrative and psychological clues, "Francine" is an unsparing study of profound isolation. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Sep 11, 2012

Fresh: A glum but tenderly observed micro-portrait of a woman struggling to re-enter society after being released from prison. – Justin Chang, Variety, Sep 5, 2012

Rotten: What with the unexciting hand-held camerawork, and the off-putting script and lead performance, "Francine" remains as frustrating as its inscrutable title character. – Farran Smith Nehme, New York Post, Sep 14, 2012

Rotten: Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky, documentary makers trying their hand at drama, inspire a certain voyeuristic fascination toward the character but rarely sympathy. – Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader, Nov 8, 2012
