Plot Summary

Boris Karloff stars in Frankenstein, as the screen's most memorable monster, in what many consider to be the greatest horror film ever made. Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) dares to tamper with life and death by creating a human monster (Karloff) out of lifeless body parts. Director James Whale's adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel blended with Karloff's compassionate portrayal of a creature groping for identity makes Frankenstein a masterpiece not only of the genre, but of all time.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A stirring grand-guignol type of picture, one that aroused so much excitement at the Mayfair yesterday that many in the audience laughed to cover their true feelings. – Mordaunt Hall, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: [Whale] did it in the Grand Guignol manner, with as many queer sounds, dark corners, false faces and cellar stairs as could possibly be inserted. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Maximum of stimulating shock is there, but the thing is handled with subtle change of pace and shift of tempo that keeps attention absorbed to a high voltage climax. – Alfred Rushford Greason, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: As much as the later movies diluted the character of the Frankenstein creature, nothing could blunt the impact made by Karloff in the role of the most memorable movie monster of all time. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Jun 10, 2008

FINALLY!!!!

Cool!! I'm the first to write about the original Frankenstein. This is the classic that started it all! I was hoping that iTunes would release this ever since they came out with The Bride of Frankenstein (you can't have one without the other). I hope that iTunes comtinues releasing the classic "Universal" monster movies. How about The Invisible Man or Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman? Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein would be great too.

HALLELUJAH!

Frankenstein, Oh man was this one of my favorite monster movies of all time. Boris Karloff did spectacular job as the monster. The story is good (must warn you however, it is based off the stage play rather than the novel. If you want to watch Frankenstein as he really was see Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. As for me, I'm gonna watch this one). James Whale, congratulations for making one of my favorite monsters become famous and congratulations Apple for uploading this on iTunes. Keep up the good work. Hope you'll get to upload Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man (that is my favorite Universal Monster movie) soon.
