Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A clever idea that could have worked as a novella, the urban-fantasy-cum-sci-fier Franklyn doesn't cut it by the bigscreen rulebook. – Derek Elley, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Ultimately it doesn't quite work, but along the way it is easy to be somewhat sucked in, especially by Eva Green's suicidal artist and Sam Riley's emotionally shattered dreamer – Louise Keller, Urban Cinefile, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Franklyn is wonky and self-defeating: there are lots of gauche moments. Still, it's entertaining, and commendable for its strangeness. – Edward Porter, Times [UK], Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: An admirably non-formulaic drama, which manages to reconcile the opposed British film traditions of contemporary, realistic, low-key character drama with eccentric, flamboyant, Gothic fantasy. It certainly marks out McMorrow as a talent to watch. – Kim Newman, Empire Magazine, Jul 7, 2010

Gerald McMorrow is at it again!!

In the year 1956 a genius was born. His tools of artistry would not be the pen or the paintbrush, but his comically over-sized glasses and his soul. Gerald McMorrow is a director sent straight from the heavens. Gerald McMorrow has painted a masterpiece in the movie Franklyn. Whenever a director like him gets their mitts on a script that is when it turns golden. There are a few problems in the film with lighting and scenery. In several scenes one can see the micro-phone and the guy holding the camera. Yet, besides these minute flaws the film is a masterpiece of the human condition.

Eh'

I like both Ryan and Eva as actors, but this movie was a bit weak. It could be my personal preference in movies and I won't recommed 'not' seeing it, but it's very much an artistic fantasy so if you're like me, you probably won't enjoy it. It's full of esoteric symbolism. I was hoping for something like Underworld with regard to action and storytelling, but it felt more like 2001: A Space Odyssey.

An Intriguing Action Packed Film

Although I had my doubts about Franklyn, with its fate motifs and unique cast of characters, it definitely exceeded my expectations. Franklyn tracks four strangers and intertwines their lives by connecting their struggles. The plot is profound and keeps the viewer questioning until (and to some extent, even after) the very end. An excellent and illuminating film that is thought provoking and can be watched again and again.
