Plot Summary
The explosive sequel to the Asian action hit of 2001, Friend 2: The Legacy picks up 17 years later as Joon-seak is discharged from prison to find his gang has been taken over by a treacherous new leader. As he plots to regain power, he is confronted with younger, more ruthless gangsters in what has become the region’s most power crime organization, as well as a rival gang whose blood-drench violence knows no bounds. Fresh: The subtle anguish of performances by Mr. Yoo and Mr. Kim is a welcome addition to the gangster flick family.
Rotten: The moral that hoodlums who abide by loyalty and principles are redeemable remains entirely suspect.
Rotten: While it's not much worse than its predecessor, Friend 2: The Legacy has none of the bromantic charm that made Friend, South Korean writer-director Kyung-Taek Kwak's 2001 gangster drama, the highest-grossing film in Korean history.
