Plot Summary

Ever wonder: if I died tomorrow, who would come to my funeral? How badly do you want to know the answer? And how far would you go to find out? Friended to Death tracks the comedic extremes to which Facebook addict Michael Harris will go in his desperate attempt to find out who his true friends are. After having the worst day of his life, Michael (Ryan Hansen - Veronica Mars, Party Down), finds himself fired from his dream job and ditched by his best friend Joel (Zach McGowan - Shameless, Black Sails). Wounded and vengeful, with nothing more to lose than his own inflated ego, Michael does what any social media-obsessed loner would do: he fakes his death online to see who shows up at his staged funeral. But what begins as a simple litmus test for friendship combusts into a nuclear meltdown leaving Michael to contain the fallout. In the end, a tongue-in-cheek commentary emerges from the ashes, in this hilarious examination of friendship in today’s hyper-connected world of social media.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Movies have struggled to make social media cinematic, but judging from "Friended to Death," the revolution can wait. – Ben Kenigsberg, New York Times, May 1, 2014

Rotten: An overly broad and silly package whose one-joke, sitcom-like premise strains to fill feature length. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, May 1, 2014

Rotten: You can sense the director, Sarah Smick, gearing up to make a point. It proves rather obvious: Real connections are meaningful and too much Facebook is bad. – Calum Marsh, Village Voice, Apr 29, 2014

Fresh: The story's message may not be the most original one in the world - put down your device and make eye contact - but it's fun to watch it unfold in a world that, while far from realistic, feels real enough. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, May 1, 2014

Timely Comedy

I’m a huge fan of indie comedies, and Friended to Death was just what the doctor ordered. Once the opening montage hits and introduces the lead character with his parking ticket obsession, the laughs start and don’t stop. I even found myself quoting some of the dialogue after seeing the movie. If you can laugh at your own (or your “friends’”) use of Facebook, this is a winner for sure.

Great Performances

Hilarious performances from a great cast. Witty dialogue. Fun movie.

Friended to Death

Friended To Death is a witty film with fun, over the top characters whose antics are both hysterical and heartbreaking . The film illustrates just how far a social media addict might go to find out who his real friends are.
After getting fired and losing his best friend, Michael Harris, a detestable parking enforcement officer played by Ryan Hansen, decides to find out if anyone would care if he died. So, being the social media addict he is, Michael fakes his own death on Facebook to his see who will care enough to come to his funeral. As Michael’s hoax spirals out of control, he begins to realize that
connections made online can never compare to the true relationships found in real life.
In this funny, zany film, while we laugh at the wild antics, we’ll see a little bit of ourselves.
The actors did an amazing job of bringing life to this “sign of our times” story.
Congratulations to the filmmakers for giving voice to the profound role social media plays in our lives!
I highly recommend this totally enjoyable film!
