Plot Summary
A devout Southern Indiana Quaker family attempts to resist the call to arms during the Civil War, but their pacifism is sorely tested by the events that engulf them in this classic film directed by William Wyler ("Ben Hur," "The Best Years of Our Lives"). Intriguing events unfold as a young Quaker woman falls in love with a soldier. Moving and often humorous story of the painful changes confronting five families and the choices they are forced to make. Starring screen legend Gary Cooper ("High Noon," "The Pride of the Yankees"), Oscar-nominee Dorothy McGuire ("Gentleman's Agreement," "The Greatest Story Ever Told") and Anthony Perkins ("Psycho," "Murder on the Orient Express"). Leonard Maltin gives this classic film his highest rating, "****" (four stars).

Friendly Persuasion
This wonderful movie, directed by one of the great directors of all time, William Wyler, won the coveted Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. It is the story of a Quaker family during the Civil War and their struggles to preserve their non-violent teachings with the need to defend their home against raiders. Dorothy McGuire is the Quaker minister but her husband, Gary Cooper, has difficulty suppressing his desire to race to church with his non-Quaker neighbor (Robert Middleton). Anthony Perkins, in his first major role, plays their son who questions whether he is concealing doubts about his manhood by observing his church's doctrine to refuse to fight. There is a great deal of fun and comedy in this film which is rich in characters and memorable scenes. The film stands up well after 50 years. It's for the whole family - don't miss it!
Great Movie
I first saw this movie as a child in the theater and loved it then. It is filled with humor,pathos, torn idealogies and family love. I have seen this movie many times over the years and it still holds up due to a great story, a feeling of real family and the immersion of the viewer into the times that are being presented. I recommend this as a must see movie.

One of the best movies by Gary Cooper - funny and heart warming - serious drama and suspense with lots of funny parts though out - with Gary Cooper & all his movie family.
