Plot Summary

In this landmark film, passion and tragedy collide on a military base as a fateful day in December 1941 draws near. Private Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) is a soldier and former boxer being manipulated by his superior and peers. His friend Maggio (Frank Sinatra) tries to help him but has his own troubles. Sergeant Warden (Burt Lancaster) and Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr) tread on dangerous ground as lovers in an illicit affair. Each of their lives will be changed when their stories culminate in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Winner of eight Oscars®, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting awards for Sinatra in a career-defining role and for Donna Reed as a not-so-wholesome club hostess.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Out of From Here to Eternity, a novel whose anger and compassion stirred a postwar reading public as few such works have, Columbia and a company of sensitive hands have forged a film almost as towering and persuasive as its source. – A.H. Weiler, New York Times, Jan 29, 2014

Fresh: Scriptwriter Daniel Taradash rescued, if not quite a gem, then at least a high-grade industrial diamond from this rough original. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It is an important film from any angle, presenting socko entertainment for big business. – William Brogdon, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Rapturously received from the moment it was released in 1953, From Here to Eternity remains, half a century later, a singular cinematic experience, one of the landmarks of American film. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jan 29, 2014

Shot in 4:3

This is probably unnecessary for most fans of Old Hollywood movies, but for the sake of Bijous & anyone under similar misunderstandings-- From Here to Eternity (like most movies of its era) was not shot in any type of Widescreen process. It's supposed to be in 4:3. By the way, it's one of the greatest examples of Studio-Era Hollywood moviemaking-- right up there with Casablanca, Sunset Boulevard, and High Noon. Hope this helps.

Wonderful Film!

This movie has a stellar cast that give stellar performances! So nice to see Deborah Kerr in a different role, as well as Donna Reed, who incidentally won an Oscar for her performance! Can't say enough! If you watch this movie be ready for a change in the cast, like I said those two actresses give performances way off of their usual good girl routines! The Donna Reed Show came after this movie, but still! What a change!

Widescreen Format - NOT

The Format is 4:3 (640x480) - Standard old TV version. It is not Widescreen.
