Plot Summary

In 1979, as China re-opened its doors to the West, virtuoso Isaac Stern received an unprecedented invitation from its government to tour the country. This extraordinary experience became the landmark, Oscar-winning documentary From Mao to Mozart -- a beautiful expression of two different cultures brought together by a single man and the music that they share. During his month-long journey, Stern taught students the formerly forbidden music of Western classical masters. From one-on-one sessions and school visits to public performances with Chinese musicians, Stern relished the experience of meeting the people "first as musicians, then as friends."

From Mao to Mozart Rocks!

Finally some movies on classical music make it to itunes. This oscar winning documentary should be a part of any classical music lover who owns an ipod. Stern is gives a great look into the world of music performance and pedagogy. This is also a great way to remember David Golub who is considered by many a pianist's pianist. He was a great partner to Stern in China. In addition to a look into a classical musician's world, this film also gives insights into China after Mao's cultural revolution. Even Mao could not break the power of classical music which seems to run in the blood of contemporary chinese musicians.

Very impressive

A very impressive documentary! A must see for anyone who is interested in Music.

This shows so well how music is a universal language

I loved this documentary when it first came out and I love it now... another documentary I loved about music and musicians was "Music from the Inside Out" - and now "Playing for Change" is coming out - in fact you can get 2 of their songs/videos here on iTunes. All wonderful, uplifting, inspiring depictions of people coming together with/through music!
