Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Fun With Dick & Jane offers the faintly depressing sight of Jim Carrey, like Dick Harper, doing whatever it takes to earn his supper. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 7, 2011

Rotten: In striving for inspiration, Fun with Dick and Jane discovers moments of cleverness, but there aren't enough of them, nor are they sustained. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Jul 15, 2008

Rotten: They are funny bits, but there are too few of them. Fun With Dick and Jane just isn't all that fun. – Bill Muller, Arizona Republic, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The film proposes Carrey as an Everyman for the 21st century. But if you don't sympathize with the film's variations on the American Dream, that's a frightening thought. – Leo Goldsmith, Reverse Shot, Jun 24, 2010

Much funnier than the remake

I remember seeing this in the theater and on TV/video a few years later when I was a kid (I was 10 when it came out). I thought it was funny then, and it's still funny today. The 2005 remake was a silly, campy remake with political overtones (trying to show the evils of big business, etc.) which the original doesn't even attempt. The original is just a cute, campy movie about what two yuppies would do if they suddenly lost their source of income and resorted to blue collar crime. George Segal and Jane Fonda were PERFECT in this movie, as was Ed McMahon as George Segal's boss.

The remake took what was once an almost believable comedy and made it into a ridiculous farce with Alec Baldwin playing a CEO who is so outrageously greedy and evil and Jim Carrey played a Dick Harper who was such a gullible dummy...I just hated it after having scene the original, in which Dick Harper was actually a rocket scientist, not some dumb fall guy. Given the choice, see this one instead (or at least FIRST).

Timeless

Still one of the funniest comedies to date. Some of the lines are priceless …one after another. The "remake" in 2005 was fine, but not memorable and doesn't really compare. Jane Fonda rocks this movie. (I was 15 when this came out, and it still cracks me up today). If you enjoy movies like Neil Simon's 'California Suite', you'll love this production.

Fun With Dick And Jane (1997 Version)

old, & please do not be mistaken, there is a new version that most of us would think is better. try Fun With Dick & Jane (2005). Don't try it even if you have the slightest feeling you won't like it... it isn't a modern day movie.
