Plot Summary
This quirky documentary explores the dimensions of grief people experience over the loss of a pet. With interviews from grieving pet owners, veterinarians, psychologists, sociologists, religious scholars, neuroscientists, and the professionals who preserve and re-purpose a pet's body for their devastated clientele (including taxidermy, cloning, and mummification), "Furever" confronts contemporary perspectives on attachment, religion, ritual, grief, and death, and studies the psychological and physiological bonds that form between humans and animals. Eye-opening, heartwarming!
Amy Finkel does a beautiful job of exploring the grief and deep sense of loss almost all of us have experienced over the death of a beloved animal, but through a lens most of us have probably never even considered: pet preservation. This film helps us realize how ancient and deep the human-animal bond is. It's as old as time and we are reminded that while some cultures see animals as servants, others deify them and consider them our closest spiritual connections to the universe.
The couple who freeze dried their dog, or the woman who made a diamond ring from her pet's ashes, or the guy who spent $100,000 to travel to South Korea to clone his dog -- they really aren't any different from the rest of us. We realize that we all have difficulty saying goodbye - whether it's a human or an animal, and this film will open your mind to all the different ways of doing that.
