Plot Summary
Best-selling comic book artist Joann Sfar delivers an inventive biography of famed French singer Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino). Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, Sfar follows Gainsbourg from his childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris to his transition from painter to jazz musician to pop superstar and his many relationships with beautiful women, including Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon). Employing a witty, surrealistic style GAINSBOURG: A HEROIC LIFE also boasts a soundtrack that plays like a time capsule of ‘60’s Paris.

Fresh: There's one good reason to see this biopic of the French pop-cabaret songster Serge Gainsbourg, and that's its lead actor, Erik Elmosnino.
Fresh: Unconventional, imaginative, nothing if not audacious, "Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life" is a portrait of creativity from the inside, a serious yet playful attempt to find an artistic way to tell an emotional truth.
Rotten: Beyond its fantasy elements, Sfar's film doesn't color outside the lines as much as he might like us to think.
Fresh: A lively bout between bio-pic and fairy tale.

Fantastique
Extra ordinary. I loved it. Acting, sets, costumes, music, story telling - all gorgeous. Tells the story with cohesion and only a minimum of flashbacks. The women are wonderful. Great movie.
