Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: One can only guess why Ethan Hawke felt compelled to make a high dive from the sublimity of "Before Midnight" into the twisted rubble of "Getaway." – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jul 22, 2014

Rotten: Getaway has some of the crass trappings of a charmingly crass, go-for-broke action pic like the delightful Crank. But it's too dumb - and far too cynical about what audiences want - to even know how to have fun with them. – Adam Markovitz, Entertainment Weekly, Aug 30, 2013

Rotten: For 89 minutes that feel like 89 hours, cars speed out of control and crash doing only PG-13 damage. The damage to your brain while watching it is incalculable. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Aug 30, 2013

Rotten: [A] video game posing as a movie, a preposterously plotted kidnapping story starring a high-performance Mustang. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Jul 22, 2014

"GETAWAY"…FROM THIS MOVIE!

Of all the terrible movies I've seen so far in 2013 (and trust me, there's been a lot), "Getaway" is quite easily among the worst of the worst. I honestly can't think of anything positive to say about this mess of a film, other than the fact that it's relatively short, gets right to the point, and literally escapes from your memory in less than a day. But for the most part, it's far too cynical, dumb, and morose to enjoy even as mindless entertainment. And as a result, the film crashes and burns right from the start and never once recovers. Essentially, the story follows Ethan Hawke as Brent Magna, a former race car driver living in Sofia, Bulgaria for some bizarre reason who gets a mysterious phone call telling him a) his wife has been kidnapped and b) he has to follow his precise instructions or she'll die. His directions are to steal a particular car that has just been left for him in a particular spot, and then simply drive around Sofia smashing into farmers' markets and public parks at the whim of the person on the other end of the phone. This car is also equipped with cameras and microphones, lest the hero get any funny ideas about escaping. For added nefariousness, the voice on the phone is provided by Jon Voight, whose acting reputation has practically stopped dead in its tracks at this point. After just screeching around the entire big city for a while, dutifully knocking lots of things over while evading the vincible police, Brent is waylaid by a teenage girl carjacker played by Selena Gomez, obviously. He easily swipes the gun right out of her hands, and then, instead of driving away and leaving her behind, he absurdly pulls her into the car and takes her with him. So now he's got a passenger/carjacker/hostage he doesn't need or want. They talk openly about how to escape their predicament (despite the aforementioned microphones), more monotonously bland car action occurs, and that's basically it. The good news is that if you've always wanted to see Hawke bicker endlessly with a teenage girl for 90 straight minutes, this is your chance. But seriously, what is the villain's master plan through all of this idiotic insanity? Oh, the usual: something totally convoluted and impossible, a grand scheme that's elaborate without being remotely interesting and that requires a whole lot of things beyond his control to happen at just the right time and in just the right way. This featherbrained, high-octane misfire was directed by Courtney Solomon (the man to blame for 2000's "Dungeons & Dragons"), who evidently is capable of staging exciting action (as seen in one only one terrific extended shot in the entire film) and has simply chosen not to. Most of "Getaway" consists of chaotic, fast-cut car wrecks and other related mayhem, all of it entirely devoid of character and personality, none of it plausible or even a tiny bit thrilling, since the horrendous editing never lets us see what's happening to begin with. At the end of the day, this entire flick is nothing more than a bunch of car chase sequences loosely strung together by one of the laziest, most predictable plots brought to life in any movie this year. And Gomez's annoyingly sarcastic "smart-mouth" performance certainly doesn't help matters either. Anyway, unless you're a fan of bad action flicks with obnoxious characters and overly repetitive chase scenes, there's no reason why you should even consider seeing this mindless mess.

I don't care what the critics say!!!!

This movie was awesome and had action. Sure, it's not the most realistic movie but the car scenes looked so real and were well done. Selena Gomez is an amazing actress and was so believable in this movie. She was also the star. I never knew what was going to happen next and I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole movie watching this! Buy this as soon as you can! Don't listen to the critics! They are so biast, they give good reviews for kids movies that need no effort or anything! Buy this now!

Seriiously?

Cheap „Made in Bulgaria“ action flick with a very weak story and even weaker prop.
Probably made for the Selena Gomez fanbase (my daughter is one of them and she would listen/watch anything with Miss Gomez).
If you are into serious action movies, stay away from this but I guess that for younger teenagers, this movie is just right. Fast and brainless. *LOL*
