Plot Summary
In the year 2029, the world has become interconnected by a vast electronic network that permeates every aspect of life. That same network also becomes a battlefield for Tokyo's Section Nine security force, which has been charged with apprehending the master hacker known only as the Puppet Master. Spearheading the investigation is Major Motoko Kusanagi, who - like many in her department - is a cyborg officer, far more powerful than her human appearance would suggest. And yet as the Puppet Master, who is even capable of hacking human minds, leaves a trail of victims robbed of their memories. Motoko begins to ponder the very nature of her existence: is she purely an artificial construct, or is there more? What, exactly, is the "ghost" - her essence - in her cybernetic "shell"?

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Mamoru Oshii's direction deftly merges gritty realism with a dreamlike quality.
Fresh: I enjoyed its visuals, its evocative soundtrack (including a suite for percussion and heavy breathing), and its ideas.
Fresh: This is a work of profound and melancholic beauty; every bit as essential in the 21st century as it was in the 20th.
Fresh: I confess I find it too opaque to make the kind of investment that would qualify me as a real fan. But it should be seen.

cool movie
I really do like this movie. I like the sequel as well, however, I can't really find that film. They should put ghost in the shell: innocence on I-tunes.

Even Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel said this was a masterpiece
Even though I generally do not trust those reviewers, especially Roger Ebert for saying that the original 1954 Godzilla sucked and yet he felt that Ang Lee's Hulk was a comic book movie masterpiece like Sin City, these reviewers are right on the ball about this. This movie is great with its storyline, the characters are three dimensional, the science fiction concepts behind this are great, the soundtrack is great, and last but not least......it is beautifully animated. I want alot of people to get a look at this shining example of brilliant anime if they want to learn how to make a great one. The only anime that could possibly beat this masterpiece is Akira [which would probably please alot of otakus on iTunes]. There are two different anime versions of Ghost in the Shell [the films and Stand Alone Complex], but this one personally is the best of them. Before James Cameron made Avatar, the film that made alot of his fans (including me) disappointed, he said that this is a masterpiece. Bottomline, if you love science fiction or anime or perhaps both I suggest that you check this out [man, how many times have I ended a review like that?].
