Plot Summary

London, 1962, when the Cold War meets the Sexual Revolution. Two teenage girls – GINGER & ROSA – are inseparable. They skip school together, talk about love, religion and politics and dream of lives bigger than their mothers’ domesticity. But the growing threat of nuclear war casts a shadow over their lives. Ginger (Elle Fanning) is drawn to poetry and protest, while Rosa (Alice Englert) shows Ginger how to smoke cigarettes, kiss boys and pray. Both rebel against their mothers (Jodhi May and Christina Hendricks). Meanwhile, Ginger’s pacifist father, Roland (Alessandro Nivola) seems a romantic, bohemian figure to the girls. He encourages Ginger’s ‘Ban-the-Bomb’ activism, while Rosa starts to take a very different interest in him. As Ginger’s parents fight and fall apart, Ginger finds emotional sanctuary with a gay couple, both named Mark (Timothy Spall and Oliver Platt), and their American friend, the poet Bella (Annette Bening). Finally, as the Cuban Missile Crisis escalates – and it seems the world itself may come to an end – the lifelong friendship of the two girls is shattered. Ginger clutches at one hope; if she can help save the world from extinction, perhaps she too will survive this moment of personal devastation.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Sally Potter's twin interests - in grand world movements and in the grand internal movements in people lives - are effectively brought to bear in "Ginger & Rosa," her best film of the decade. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Mar 21, 2013

Fresh: Elle's acting feels artless and naive, and all the more powerful for it. Fanning easily convinces you of Ginger's emotional reality - that every moment is the only moment. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Mar 21, 2013

Fresh: There's not a bad performance in the bunch. – Sara Stewart, New York Post, Mar 15, 2013

Raw, real, wonderful!

This movie is not for those looking for a fast-paced movie with lots of action. It's intensity is drawn from emotion and complex personal experiences. It is not centered on the war, but uses the war as a sort of backdrop and analogy for what Elle's character is going through. The acting by the entire cast is superb and unlike a few of the other reviews, I personally loved the way the movie was shot and the style of the director. It's made to make you relate the movie to true life as opposed to the typical big Hollywood movie.

In the end you feel everything Ginger is going through and leaves you understanding everything but also wanting more, because you have become attached to the main characters.

A Bad Play

The actors are terrific but the story and directing and editing are horrible. I guess this was a play of some sort. There is no real plot, except that one guy is a devil and others bounce off him. So what? To see how much pain we can endure? The anti-war stuff was blah, blah. If you like lots of screaming, tears and repressed anger and despair, knock yourself out.

TERRIBLE

absolutely terrible. Words can't describe. Ugh
