Plot Summary

GIRLFRIEND, is a gentle yet complex exploration of the nature of love and human compassion. Evan (Evan Sneider) is a young man with Down syndrome who lives with his mother Celeste (Amanda Plummer) in a poor, working-class town hard hit by recession. When Evan unexpectedly comes into a large amount of money, he decides to use it to pursue Candy (Shannon Woodward, TV's RAISING HOPE), a local girl that he’s been in love with since high school. Candy is a single parent with huge debts, who can’t shake the attentions of her volatile ex-boyfriend, Russ (Jackson Rathbone, THE TWILIGHT SAGA). Knowing Evan’s intentions are to have a relationship with her but unsure if she can ever fully return his love, Candy nevertheless accepts Evan’s offer of financial help. When Russ catches on to Candy and Evan’s relationship, an intricate web of volatile emotions, expectations and secrets emerge.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Doesn't miss many cliches of small-town, working-class, going-nowhere life. – Mike Hale, New York Times, Jul 14, 2011

Fresh: A modest, uneven example of regional American independent film. But it has tremendous heart and integrity... – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jul 17, 2011

Rotten: Implausibilities mount, and by the last act Lerner appears to have lost any compunction he might have had about using his protagonist to tug the audience's heartstrings. – Benjamin Mercer, Village Voice, Jul 12, 2011
