Plot Summary
The confessional, behind-the-scenes showbiz melodrama goes under the knife — so to speak — in this drag comedy. Girls Will Be Girls casts three male performers in the roles of Evie Harris (Jack Plotnick), a has-been starlet of the '70s who has since gone to seed in her decaying Hollywood home; her best friend and domestic servant, Coco (Clinton Leupp); and Varla (Jeffrey Roberson), the daughter of a deceased peer/rival of Evie's who shows up to rent out a room in her home. The tension among the trio of women escalates as Evie prepares for a pull-out-all-the-stops television special commemorating her past career glories, which include sundry disaster movies and TV variety shows. What Evie doesn't know is that the naïve-seeming Varla has a debt to settle for her deceased mom, and will stop at nothing to seek vengeance. All three lead actors developed their characters in stage shows and cabaret acts; writer/director Richard Day wrote for such television shows as Ellen and The Larry Sanders Show before helming this film, his debut. After its 2003 Sundance premiere, Girls Will Be Girls was acquired by IFC Films for a theatrical release.

Fresh: The film is appropriately cynical, pleasantly camp and just fresh enough to be funny more often than not.
Fresh: Day and his cast have a lot of fun with their 80 minutes of screen time because they have the courage of their silliness and an uninhibited sense of humor.
Rotten: The comedy here is, in every possible meaning of the word, broad.
Rotten: While cries of misogyny are unwarranted (it's clear that no actual women were harmed in filming), cries of 'ewwwww!' are not.

Warning! Not your typical comedy.
After producing popular television for upwards of a decade, Richard Day makes his directorial debut with this wacky drag comedy 'Girls Will be Girls". Being made on a shoestring budget did not stop this 'little indie that could' from becoming a wonderfully hysterical cult classic. And even in spite of a veneer of cheesy 70's camp, it's a very well constructed movie. From the wonderful acting to the hilarious writing, this film holds together pretty well. With a cast of extremely colorful characters and the occasional musical number, this is a very unusual, albeit extremely entertaining film. All that being said, that does not mean that this film will appeal to all audiences. In fact, I can GUARANTEE it won't. With jokes involving many taboo topics (From drug use to abortion and EVERYTHING in between) this film is not for the faint of heart. But this movie definitely proves that you don't have to have alot of money to make a great film. So, if you are not easily offended, are a fan of such films as 'Pricilla Queen of the Desert' and 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' you'll probably love this official Sundance pick, 'Girls Will Be Girls'.
A massive movie not for the masses
This movie is genius. It is brightly dark, deadpan dead on, overly offensive, and OMFG is it funny. Anyone who "gets it" will get all they hoped for. If you've ever been on the outside looking in, and I mean of a vodka bottle, then you'll love this movie. Boring people will hate it. If you can't find the tragic funny, or have never enjoyed a good bad drag, move on along to whitewashed drag fare like Too Wong Foo. My "hometown" fifteen-year-old nephew loves it. Urban gays love it. And women who hold their own totally howl. But if you spell "wholesome" with a "w," it's best if you just move along. Also, what's with this trailer? The original trailer was much funnier, but probably PG-13.
I can honestly say I've never seen a movie like this...and I never will again.
I'm not sure what to say of this film. Since it's basically a home movie made out of the pockets of some under-funded (Yet talented, regardless.) actors I would have to call this movie mediocre based simply on the production values, the revenue it generated and the lack of professionalism behind it. However, this film is blessed with some incredibly skilled actors (And yes, I do mean actors. They are men.) and the writing is fantastic, pulling out all the stops to make you laugh. The most amazing part is they managed to keep the jokes fairly original, not resorting to the mainstream drag-queen jokes that every 5-year old on the corner knows. (And won't laugh at.) And the director, while operating on a budget of what, two cents? has the talent to pull this through and make a decent movie out of something that most directors wouldn't look twice at. Had this made it to more theaters I can almost guarantee it would have done one of two things: 1: Start riots 2: Been a hit But "Girls" will be confined to the shelves as a cult-classic, which isn't too bad a position any more honestly. Congratulations Mr. Plotnick. You're a real actress now!
