Plot Summary
Godzilla's 50th Anniversary project and costliest adventure to date out of 28 films. Earth has been relatively peaceful since Godzilla was successfully buried deep in ice beneath the South Pole. Then - sometime a few years hence-several of his old nemeses return to wreak havoc on cities worldwide. A huge spaceship suddenly appears and neutralizes all the monsters in a blink. The visitors are "Xiliens," who take human form and announce they would like to negotiate a peace treaty that would replace the United Nations with a "United Universe". They are indeed too good to be true, however. It doesn't take long before their nefarious real purpose is exposed - conquering Earth. Greatly outmatched, Earth officials decide to de-freeze Godzilla as man's only hope to vanish the invaders, as well as the monsters they control. Only trouble is Godzilla is still mad at man for freezing him in the first place.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: This 28th entry in Toho Studio's series about the fire-breathing big fella is campily engaging for a while, but at two hours-plus you may come out feeling captivated dead.

Jerks
Godzilla's final film...for the time being anyway.
Godzilla: Final Wars is an interesting film. It certainly doesn't seem like a traditional Godzilla film. But at the same time, it does have a certain quality that keeps it from being totally alien. It actually very much feels like a modern day American action film, which definitely has out a divide bewteen fans. Should a Godzilla movie feel like an action movie? And more interestingly, should a Godzilla movie feel like an American action film? It certainly leaves one with a feeling of having eaten a strange food. It's different, but thats not a bad thing. It definitely takes it's plot from Invasion Of Astro Monster and Destroy All Monsters, which are both Godzilla movies, but it also takes cues from Star Wars and The Matrix. In many ways, the movie feels like a video game, with the plot playing second banana to the action sequences, and what action sequences they are, with the motorcycle fight being one of the coolest fight scenes ever put to celluloid. The film is very nice to look at, but overall there's not much else. Even Godzilla vs Megalon, possibly the single worst Godzilla film ever made, had at least some symbolism to let the viewer chew on. And the music, while certainly interesting to listen to, just doesn't quite sit with me. Keith Emerson is a fine composer if his score for Nighthawks is any evidence, but I just couldn't help but be slightly put off by the use of a throw-away music tune for the end credits. This was supposed to be Godzilla's 50th anniversary film, so let's hear Godzilla's theme or the Monster Zero March! Still, it's worth viewing for it's action scenes, and for a few nice performances by Akira Takarada and Don Frye and Kumi Mizuno, but don't go looking much else except for eye candy.
Alright, one of the best of the Millenium Series!
Now, just 3 requests, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, Godzilla Tokyo SOS, and Godzilla vs. DESTOROYAH!
