Plot Summary

From Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney and producer Graydon Carter comes a probing look into the uncanny life of national treasure and gonzo journalism inventor Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. A fast moving, wildly entertaining documentary with an iconic soundtrack, the film addresses the major touchstones in Thompson’s life — his intense and ill fated relationship with the Hell’s Angels, his near-successful bid for the office of sheriff in Aspen in 1970, the notorious story behind the landmark Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his deep involvement in Senator George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign, and much more. Narrated by Johnny Depp.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: At its worst, the film takes a long detour into Thompson's admiration for an utterly banal 1974 Carter speech (The Powerful were sticking it to The People again) as a way to make us feel virtuous, political and leftish. – Kyle Smith, New York Post, Jul 20, 2008

Fresh: Though Thompson's long slide into irrelevance in the 80s and 90s is duly noted, most of the movie covers his glory days during the Vietnam era, when he was arguably the most exciting and important literary talent in America. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Oct 18, 2008

Fresh: Neatly balancing full-hearted celebration with evenhanded examination. – Joe Leydon, Houston Chronicle, Jul 18, 2008

Fresh: Filmmaker Alex Gibney had access to those who knew the guy, the famous, the infamous and the obscure, and he paints a picture of a serious journalist who saw himself documenting 'the death of the American Dream.' – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, May 13, 2009

Terrific Doc on the Dr

If you are an HST fan, this movie is certainly a must see, for obvious reasons. For those who are not familiar with Hunter S. Thompson and the legacy he left, this documentary film will captivate you and draw you in to the mostly sheltered intimate life of one the the greatest journalists and writers in the last 50 years. The film reveals the late HST from his humble beginnings in Kentucky, follows him to the time he spent in the military, on to his book and time spent with the Hell's Angels. There are many interviews with those who knew or were otherwise close with the Doctor, including his son, former wives, politicians, and movie stars including Johnny Depp, Benecio Del Toro, and John Cusack. The captivating raw video footage and clips alone are worth the cost of this movie. You'll walk away from this movie with a greater appreciation for one of the most underappreciated writers or our time.

One of the best docs about an individual I've ever seen!!!!

This Doc Rocks!! Thompson for Sheriff!! With appearences from Jimmy Buffett and Jimmy Carter narration from Johnny Depp this documentary is an instant classic.

Remarkable

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." RIP HST.
