Plot Summary
Academy Award® nominees Natalie Portman and Javier Bardem star in two-time Academy Award® winning director Milos Forman's thrilling new romantic drama! Goya's Ghosts is a sweeping historical epic, told through the eyes of celebrated Spanish painter Francisco Goya (Skarsgard). Set against the backdrop of political turmoil at the end of the Spanish Inquisition and start of the invasion of Spain by Napoleon's army, the film captures the essence and beauty of Goya's work which is best known for both the colorful depictions of the royal court and its people, and his grim depictions of the brutality of war and life in 18th century Spain. When Goya's beautiful muse (Portman) is accused of being a heretic, renowned painter Francisco Goya (Skarsgard) must convince his old friend Lorenzo (Bardem), a power-hungry monk and leader of the Spanish Inquisition, to spare her life.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: A modern sensibility afflicts much of the screenplay, with characters expressing thoughts and opinions for our ears rather than acting as people of that era.
Rotten: Fascinating ideas do hover, like mournful specters, around the edges of this meticulously detailed movie. But then they disappear, leaving us vaguely sad and unsettled, with nothing solid to grasp.
Rotten: An across-the-board disaster from one of my favorite directors, Milos Forman.
Rotten: A punishing misfire.
Customer Reviews
Great acting, great props, cool idea, never watch it again
Natalie Portman was the only reason I finished the movie. I needed closure and it never came. I walked away from it unsatisfied like I was promised a hearty meal and was served tapas.
Disappointing
This film is a huge mess, such a waste of such a premise, director, and actors. I've never guffawed at such a serious topic. This was almost as ridiculous as the History of the World, Part I...inadvertently. Avoid it if at all possible!
Rent something else!
Good beginning, average middle, dreadful end. Overall, this really is a boring film.
