Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: It is a production thoroughly worthy of all the talk it has created and the several motion-picture luminaries deserve to feel very proud of their performances, particularly Greta Garbo and Lionel Barrymore.
Fresh: As it is, the hotel is well filled.
Fresh: A commercial picture of high box office potential, first by assembling the most impressive aggregation so far of strictly Bradstreet screen names, and then by filming the play practically unaltered in form.
Fresh: It hasn't aged as well as some Oscar-winners, but neither is it as dated as, for example, Cimarron.

Incredible ensemble film! Early 30's Hollywood at it's BEST!
A fast paced, first-rate ensemble film who's script seamlessly interweaves the stories (and lives) of varied guests during their stay at The Grand Hotel. As MGM's first offering with an all-star cast the acting is wonderful with stand out performances from all (I personally love Joan Crawford as the traveling secretary kept on her toes dodging her boss — Wallace Beery as the ruthless bullying businessman — Preysing's inappropriate attentions). An intelligent and well-crafted pre-code script alternates between comedy, romance, and suspense. Can anyone ever forget Greta Garbo as the eccentric (and poignant) prima-ballerina when she sadly states "I vant to be ALONE!"? Or Lionel Barrymore's characterization of the simple and kindly accountant, Otto Kringelein, enjoying his first taste of a "posh" hotel? This is a wonderful introduction for anyone unfamiliar with classic Hollywood... Some of the biggest stars at the "greatest" studio at the beginning of one of the most celebrated periods in American film history...a very entertaining escapist film. Enjoy!
So Good!
This movie put me in a really good mood. I'm a huge Joan Crawford fan, so that's one reason why, but the movie itself was just so good. Made me a little jealous though... Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford are probably two of the most beautiful people to have walked the Earth. Haha... :-)
An Excellent Film!
A stunning, excellent film!
