Plot Summary

Based on a true story Grassroots follows the story of Grant, an eccentric, short-tempered, unemployed music critic with a tendency to wear polar bear suits who decides to run for office in Seattle. Passionate but tactless, Grant coaxes his recently fired journalist friend Phil, to be his political adviser. With Grant's zeal and Phil's political savvy they attract a ragtag group of volunteers. Together they wage an exhilarating, hilarious grassroots campaign that brings this oddball dynamic duo to the very brink of victory.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Although it only glosses the mechanics of local politics, it exudes an endearingly scruffy charm. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jul 12, 2012

Rotten: Poli-sci students may roll their eyes at true story of an upstart campaign for Seattle City Council. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 25, 2012

Rotten: Grassroots disingenuously has it both ways, reducing politics first to a David-versus-Goliath adventure, and then to an everyone-is-cool bowl of mush. – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Jul 10, 2012

Fresh: Proves very likable, if a little Sorkin-lite. – Mike McCahill, Guardian, Nov 8, 2012

Pitch imperfect

With its concept and large cast, this should have been more powerful, or funny, or emotional, or empowering, or heartfelt, or something. But it's just not.

Grassroots

Movie was wonderful, It made me want to run for office and make change in this world. I haven't felt this way after a film since Inconvenient Truth when I started a recycling program at my work. I hope you get a chance to see this movie and it inspires you!
