Plot Summary
Filmmaker Craig Zobel explores the shortcuts that some folks are willing to take to become famous while simultaneously exposing the unscrupulous manner in which others take advantage of these desperate souls with this story of two men who set out to train as record producers. Excited about the prospect of helping to sign undiscovered artists, Martin (Pat Healy) answers an ad to train as a record producer. Over the course of his apprenticeship, Martin is paired with like-minded trainee Clarence (Kene Holliday) — a middle-aged man seeking out a new career path. Upon graduating from the program, Martin and Clarence are assigned the task of traveling to towns where the company has placed newspaper ads searching for untapped talent. For a fee, these emerging talents can have their music heard by an increasingly larger audience. Though at first everything seems to be going great with their new jobs, a few unsettling developments soon lead Martin and Clarence to suspect that the company may not always have the artists' best interests in mind.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Nimble performers...lift Great World of Sound above its central gimmick, turning it into a subtle, funny and depressing observation of unspoken race and class tensions.
Fresh: Great World of Sound is about the chicanery that feeds off pinched wallets, but it's also a metaphorical satire of a music business so busy scavenging for sales it has forgotten its roots.
Fresh: Low-key but enormously charming pic.
Rotten: Anyone who has enjoyed laughing at the bad singers auditioning on American Idol, consider the independent film Great World of Sound your penance.

Kind of slow
This movie seems to aspire to be like Office Space, but it is not very funny. I had it on my iPhone for a long trip and was only able to make it about half-way through before I gave up.
So you want to be a rock star? Watch this.
The record business has some very dirty roots - always has, maybe always will. And it has a special talent for parting fools from their money. You'll think, after seeing this, that it really has little to do with the real business of music. Wrong. It's got all the lying, gambling, and ignorance down pat. If you're looking for explosions and special effects, watch another movie. This one's about real life.
it is slow but it is very good all the same
the other reviewer said it was slow and unfunny which is entirely true but it isnt trying to be a laugh out loud fast paced comedy so dont expect that, it is a very good and provocative though subtle character drama about the american dream, i sincerely enjoyed it, although it is a little depressing by the end i will say
