America's first serial killer is the subject of this documentary narrated by Tony Jay. The film looks at the life of Herman Mudgett, aka H.H. Holmes. After Holmes moved from New Hampshire to Chicago in the late 1800s, he designed a home with secret torture chambers, rented rooms to unsuspecting tourists who were in town for Chicago's 1893 World's Fair, then tortured them. H H Holmes Americas first serial killer

This documentary is great. gives wonderful re inactments of this killer.

I Had No Idea This Monster Existed!

H. H. Holmes has got to be THE worst serial killer in US history yet many, like myself, were unfamiliar with his terrible story. Insurance scammer, cadaver provider and just plain born with a love of killing, never has there been a murderer so heartless or soulless . And ingenious too. He built a house in such a way that it could torture, kill, and "process" his victims, who all too often died awake and in extreme agony. Even children were not safe from his savageness.

What is truly amazing is that we have his journal, which he wrote while in prison awaiting execution. This gives us a true look inside his mind. It is like peering into the depths of hell. Holmes could not explain why he killed; he felt that he was born with the impulse "just as a poet must write poetry". It went far beyond monetary gain and became a sickness that is almost beyond our comprehension.

No matter where your interests may lie, you will be amazed, repulsed and astounded by this man who set the blueprint for others to come. Not one boring moment in this production. The only question I have is why Holmes and his nefarious deeds are not more widely known. A five star documentary!
