Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The whole kidding trope, which you can bet was ordered by McKay and Ferrell, is pretty lame, and defeats the leads' attempts to bring shadings to cardboard cartoon characters. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Feb 4, 2013

Rotten: At least it puts forth a sound message: Kids, avoid overdoing it on sweets -- especially candy that doubles as drywall. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Feb 4, 2013

Rotten: For all the perspiration in jazzing up an old yarn, there's not a whiff of originality in how Wirkola engages with the perverse pleasures enshrined by the Grimm brothers, two of their era's shrewdest storytellers. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Jan 26, 2013

Rotten: What on Earth are Renner and Arterton doing in this godforsaken thing? – Stephanie Zacharek, Village Voice, Jan 29, 2013

HONESTLY, IT'S NOT THAT BAD.

So many film critics tend to overanalyze what these horror-fantasy movies are all about. They're just meant to be big, silly, over-the-top fun, and in a nutshell, that's exactly what this movie's entire purpose is. It isn't trying to be ambitious or tell a complex story. I mean, it's called "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" for crying out loud. There's dumb comedy, gleefully over-the-top violence, and even a talking troll. What more can you ask for? Well, a lot more, I guess…but you get the idea. Sometimes, it's just fun to completely turn your brain off for a little while and take in all the mindless blood, silly dialogue, and campy action from a film like this. At the end of the day, this is a purposely trashy guilty pleasure of a flick and nothing more. Just as long as you don't overanalyze it, you should have a good time.

You're an Idiot

If you buy/watch this movie expecting some sort of grand historical recreation with incredible billion dollar cinematography equating out to harry potter for adults you’re an idiot. If you watched the trailer you will see that this is an over the top retelling of an old fable for the sake of being over the top, fun, action packed and even comedic. This is for entertainment purposes and if you’re watching this for some ground breaking revolution you completely missed the message. Renner is carrying around a fantasy shotgun for crying out loud, what are you people expecting? If you watch this movie for what it is “Thrills, Sex and Blood” you will love it. If you watch it because you have nothing to do but tear apart movies for something they weren’t even going for, well as I have already stated: you’re an idiot. Learn to enjoy a movie for crying out loud, your over (or rather under) analytics isn’t impressing anyone.

Surprisingly Enjoyable

When I first heard that there was going to be a movie called "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," I thought it was the stupidest thing I had ever heard. When the first trailer came out, it looked a little bit better than I expected, but I still had no interest in seeing it. But when I found out that it included strong blood and gore, I thought that it couldn't be TOO bad. And surprisingly, I ended up enjoying it. Yes, it is cheesy for the most part, but it's a fun and bloody movie. A lot of people are comparing this movie to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, saying they both start out fast and then get slow for the rest of the movie until the climax hits. I disagree. I thought this movie had better pacing than AL:VH. Although I did enjoy this movie, I really don't like how they emphasize pretty much every fight scene in the trailers. There really wasn't anything new to see when I actually went to see it (besides a few scenes). But overall, I had a fun time with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and if you're looking for a fun movie for a movie night or whatever, look no further.
