Plot Summary

Is Ruby Weaver's Mr. Right really an emissary from the year 2,470, or is he just a complete loon ball? This question is at the heart of Brad Anderson's whimsical romantic comedy. The story opens with Ruby (Marisa Tomei) lamenting over her boyfriend Sam (Vincent D'Onofrio) to her shrink (Holland Taylor). In a series of flashbacks, the film quickly sketches Ruby as a neurotic with an unhappy track record concerning men and Sam as an oddball who is afraid of small dogs and has a barcode tattooed to his arm. But he's nuts over Ruby, and at least initially, that is enough for her. Slowly, Sam begins to reveal his "past." He tells her that he is from the Dubuque of the future and that he hails from a rare "anachronistic" family who believe that reproduction should occur the old-fashioned, fun way as opposed to the more popular cloning method. At first, Ruby is amused, until she realizes that he's not kidding. After a series of arguments, he agrees to visit Ruby's analyst, which yields unexpected results. This film premiered at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival.

An Underrated Wonderful Film

I had originally purchased this movie in the bargin bin at Walgreen's because it had Vincent D'Onofrio in it (I have enjoyed his work, having first seen him in the movie "Good Luck"). The movie turned out to be a wonderful surprise. The movie follows two people meeting, falling in love, and dealing with one being a time traveler. It is a new twist in the genres of romantic pictures and stories about time travelers. Readers will recognize a bit of the "Time Traveler's Wife" in this film (the movie came out before the book) only far better.

Quirky and fun

Very well done and unique movie. Vincent D'Onofrio and Marissa Tomei did a great job bringing two oddball characters completely to life. I've always liked Marissa Tomei and was glad to finally see her in a starring role with some meat on its bones. Because of one of D'Onofrio's character's quirks, the ending leaves you guessing as to what is real and what is imagined but that doesn't detract from the rest of the movie. Highly recommended.

How GOOD is it to see these two on screen??

This plot keeps you both engaged and guessing until the very end. The movie does not disappoint...There are some odd cinematic moments (the way still shots are used in certain parts of the unfolding story line) that were hard to take (a little earnest), but the acting is peerless. The story reveals in a wonderful way...like peeing the layers of an onion. You will not be disappointed by the rent or buy! Enjoy.
