Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: More moving than shocking, it proceeds slowly and gracefully, and the few scenes of bloodshed are emotionally intense rather than showily sensational. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Jul 19, 2012

Fresh: Miike brings a formal, elegant restraint to his usual flair for wild theatrics. – Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times, Jul 19, 2012

Fresh: With this sober, mournful, gorgeously mounted and marvelously acted drama, Miike connects himself to the greatest traditions of Japanese film and to the period of historical self-examination that followed the debacle of World War II. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jul 19, 2012

Rotten: Takashi Miike lets his familiar tastelessness get the better of him, relishing the grisly seppuku-by-bamboo in unnecessary detail. – Calum Marsh, Slant Magazine, Jul 16, 2012

Customer Reviews

Trailer looks very good.

Pre-ordered. Because the original used to be one of the best samurai-movies ever. I would say on the same level with the best Kurasawa's ones. I while I purchase this one I would love to have the old version as well on iTunes.

Conceptually Good; In actuality, boring

The movie is conceptually well-designed. The cinematography is beautiful - colors are amazing, etc. The first 20 minutes are great. The backstory is excruciatingly slow. The final scene could have been amazing - the idea was brilliant and in theory should have been overwhelming. In actuality the combination of slow backstory and final scene end up much less than the sum of the parts.

Hara-kiri
